Good Ways to Say Thank You After Job Interview

If you made it through a job interview – good job! The next step is to send a short thank you note to the person who interviewed you. While you may want to rush out and buy them something to say thanks, this is probably not a good idea for a number of reasons. We are going to take a look at some appropriate and not appropriate ways to say thanks after a job interview.

Non-Appropriate Thank You

While it may be considered romantic and might be good if you’re interviewing for a musical job, showing up at the workplace with a guitar or keyboard to sing a “thank you song” is going too far.  This can be worse than no thank you letter in most cases. Don’t do it!

Appropriate Thank You Letter

The shorter the thank you note, the better. A plain, white card is best. Something like, “Thanks for the opportunity to interview with your company…” or something close to that will work for most cases. Be sure to  sign your name formally. You want to close with a “Best,” or “Professionally,” or even, “Sincerely…”

Non-Appropriate Thank You Note

After your interview for a job, you shouldn’t send a cake, fruit basket, or any other gift. It may seem like a good idea, but it may be seen as you trying to bribe your way in. On top of that, it is a bit tacky on other levels as well. Before you send a large basket of fruit, stop yourself and keep it simple.

Appropriate Thank You Note

A good thank you note after the interview will be prompt. You don’t want to whip it out of your pocket  as you walk out of the interview, but you don’t want to wait more than a day or two at the most. Being prompt is a good way to really increase your chances of getting the job.
